Colored Iris in Pied Birds

The few pictures here represent a small percentage of Pied birds that have color in the iris. This finding is recent & several fanciers are working with this to see if it can be reproduced. I have talked with many breeders around the world about this facet since 2000 & no one ever saw it before or had noticed it in their birds.

Sara calls this facet "golden eye" & is working on this now. In checking with Sara (who received this "colored iris" offspring from my pair) it seems the "colored iris" is reproducible. My original pair only had the left eye in each bird partially colored; Sara's bird has obtained the coloration in both of it's eyes. One facet that is noticed is the "iris coloration" does not make a complete ring"; further selective breeding may correct this facet.

Check out Sara's web site, she has some very good pictures posted, well worth taking the time to check them out.

Sara produced this Light Ash, what is unique is it has a much lighter iris color then is normally found in this mutant.

In a recent presentation in 2006 it was noted that someone has noticed a "colored iris" in the Californian mutant (French mutant). When I first obtained information in 2005 on the Californian - no mention of a "colored iris" was made. I am glad the breeders are making closer observations within their birds.
