Tanna Fruit Dove
Ptilinopus tannensis
Range and population
Ptilinopus tannensis is endemic to
Vanuatu
where it occurs on most islands. In Loru Protected Area on
Espirito Santo, its population density was estimated to be 100-400 birds per km21
but it is less common elsewhere, especially in the southern islands3.
It inhabits lowland forest, usually to 500 m but is occasionally recorded
to 1,500 m, and is less common in semi-deciduous and degraded forest types2,3.
All lowland forests in
Vanuatu
are threatened by commercial logging and it is therefore inferred
to be declining.
