Ducula goliath

Range and population
Ducula goliath is endemic to New Caledonia (to France ). It is a humid forest species, occuring throughout the island, and ranging to 1,500 m. Recent studies have estimated much higher populations than previously surmised, with 1,500-7,000 for Parc Provincial RiviBleue depending on the season^1,3,4 and 100,000 for the entire island². As a nomadic species, it may require large areas of protected forest to survive but there is little threat to humid forest². Hunting by indigenous Kanaks is in decline^2,5 and recreational hunting is presently significant only in a few easily accessible forests. Although the overall population is considered safe, any relaxation of hunting laws would severely impact some populations².
