New Caledonian Imperial Pigeon
Ducula goliath
Range and population
Ducula goliath is endemic to
New Caledonia
(to
France
). It is a humid forest species,
occuring throughout the island, and ranging to 1,500 m. Recent studies have
estimated much higher populations than previously surmised, with 1,500-7,000 for
Parc Provincial RiviBleue depending on the season1,3,4 and
100,000 for the entire island2. As a nomadic species, it may
require large areas of protected forest to survive but there is little threat to
humid forest2. Hunting by indigenous Kanaks is in decline2,5
and recreational hunting is presently significant only in a few easily
accessible forests. Although the overall population is considered safe, any
relaxation of hunting laws would severely impact some populations2.
